AGI and the NYT Crosswords

· Venetian Ballroom A

About this session

Artificial Intelligence has achieved remarkable progress in language modeling, reasoning, and problem-solving—yet the New York Times Crossword remains one of the most enduring challenges for even the most capable AI systems. This talk examines how crosswords serve as a fascinating testbed for advancing cognitive flexibility, linguistic reasoning, and multimodal understanding in AI.While massive models trained on terawatts of computation and vast text corpora can summarize articles or generate code, they often falter at the nuanced, context-rich inferences required to solve human word puzzles. The crossword demands something deeper: the ability to interpret puns, cultural references, idioms, and abstract associations—skills that reveal the gap between specialized AI and true general intelligence.Through exploring the way humans effortlessly connect disparate ideas to decode clues, we gain insight into the creative and associative reasoning that current systems still struggle to emulate. Through examples from the New York Times Crossword and its variants, this session will illustrate why such linguistic puzzles can be more than a pastime—the can be a benchmark for measuring progress toward Artificial General Intelligence and for developing APIs and agentic frameworks that move AI closer to genuine cognitive versatility.
