About Towfique

Towfique Raj, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Departments of Neuroscience and Genetics and Genomics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and a core faculty member of the Ronald M. Loeb Center for Alzheimer’s Disease. He serves as Co-Director of the Mount Sinai Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC) Genomics Core and was Co-Chair of the Alzheimer’s Disease Sequencing Project (ADSP) AI/ML Consortium, leading efforts to develop machine learning frameworks for genetic discovery and target prioritization in neurodegenerative disease. Dr. Raj received his Ph.D. in Genetics from the University of Cambridge and completed postdoctoral training at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. His honors include the Gates-Cambridge Scholarship, NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein NRSA Fellowship, and the Charleston Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease Award. His research program integrates AI/ML, statistical genetics, and functional genomics to define the molecular mechanisms underlying Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. By leveraging large-scale multi-omics datasets and advanced computational modeling, his group links genetic risk variants to cell-type–specific molecular programs, particularly in innate immune cells such as monocytes and microglia. His laboratory leads deeply phenotyped human cohort studies, including the MyND study, to generate population-scale transcriptomic and multi-omic profiles of immune cells across disease progression. A central goal of his work is to develop interpretable AI/ML approaches to prioritize causal variants, infer gene regulatory networks, and model disease-relevant cellular states, ultimately translating genetic discoveries into biomarkers and therapeutic targets for neurodegenerative diseases.
