About Darren
Darren Cambridge, Ph.D., is Managing Director of TRAILS (Institute for Trustworthy AI in Law & Society), a $20M NSF/NIST-funded national institute spanning the University of Maryland, George Washington University, Morgan State University, and Cornell University, where he translates multidisciplinary trustworthy AI research into practice for policymakers, institutions, and the public. His career has centered on building networks and evidence around how people actually learn with technology, including through founding oa conversational AI edtech company, and directing of content strategy at the American Council on Education, policy research at the National Council of Teachers of English, and national projects for the American Council in Education and Intel as a principal consultant at the American Institutes for Research. Winner of the MacArthur Foundation Digital Media and Learning Prize, he has researched learning science and built coalitions that moved research into national policy and practice. That throughline, connecting rigorous research to the people and institutions who must act on it, now shapes how he cultivates trustworthy AI at scale.
