About Bruce

Bruce Smith is a manufacturing industry executive with more than 30 years of experience building high-performance organizations, driving profitability, and accelerating growth. Throughout his career, he has strengthened enterprise value by developing strong leadership teams, executing strategic transformations, and delivering operational excellence.

Smith is Owner, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Voltava, formed in December 2025. Voltava was created from Smith’s former company, Detroit Manufacturing Systems (DMS) - a Detroit-based contract manufacturer - through the acquisition of Android Industries and Avancez, leaders in complex module assembly, sequencing, and value-added services. Smith previously served as Chairman and CEO of DMS. Voltava employs approximately 5,500 people across 21 global locations, positioning the company to serve OEM partners worldwide.

Smith assumed leadership and partial ownership of DMS in 2018, expanded its capabilities, and scaled the business to more than $1 billion in annual revenue. In 2023, he became sole owner of DMS. His leadership style emphasizes authenticity, collaboration, and empowerment, along with a strong commitment to community engagement through charitable and volunteer efforts.

Before Voltava and DMS, Smith held senior executive roles with private equity–backed companies. Most notably, he served as co-owner, President, and CEO of BTM Company, a global leader in precision-engineered tooling and production equipment, growing the business nearly 40 percent in three years.

Earlier in his career, Smith served as President and CEO of Elyria & Hodge Foundries and Piston Group, and as President and COO of Guilford Mills and United Plastics Group, driving revenue and profitability gains through innovative strategies and lean manufacturing disciplines.

In 2023, Smith was named Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year for Michigan and Northwest Ohio. He serves on the boards of the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce and MichAuto and is a member of Carnegie Mellon University’s Mechanical Engineering Advocacy Council. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and an MBA from Harvard University.

Bruce is married and the father of four. He enjoys time with his family, reading, athletics, music, and travel.
