The Greatest Astronomy and Astrophysics Discovery Machine Ever Built: The NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory
About this session
Recently equipped with the world’s biggest digital camera, built at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, the Simonyi Survey Telescope at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory is built for high speed astronomical surveying. Over the next 10 years, scientists, engineers and developers at NSF NOIRLab and SLAC will be carrying out the Legacy Survey of Space and Time, repeatedly imaging the entire Southern sky in 6 different optical and near infrared bands, and accumulating hundreds of petabytes of pixel, catalog, and time series data for scientists all over the world to use. I will introduce the Rubin system and the data it produces, and show how our community is solving their LSST Big Data problems with AI and machine learning tools.
